Last week AZPM’s Mark McLemore took a backstage tour of the newly renovated Marroney Theatre with Assoc. Prof. Jacob Bricca, ACE and Asst. Prof Matt Marcus for a story for “Arizona Spotlight.” McLemore spoke with both Bricca and Marcus about the recent upgrades made to the venue that have expanded its capabilities as an educational resource and entertainment venue.
During the tour, Marcus described the numerous upgrades that make the venue safer, easier to work in, and more comfortable for audience members. He also shared details of the new state-of-the-art screening capabilities. About the sound quality, Bricca added “Matt was intimately involved in making sure that the sound was designed in the best way possible [so that] you can sit down and really lose yourself in a film.”
The trio also discussed TFTV’s inaugural screening event at the Marroney on April 13. Director Kristy Guevara-Flanagan and producer Helen Hood Scheer will be at the theatre to present their award-winning documentary Body Parts, a film that traces the evolution of “sex” on-screen from a woman’s perspective, exposing the uncomfortable realities behind some of Hollywood’s most iconic scenes and celebrating the bold creators leading the way for change. Following the screening, Bricca will moderate a Q&A with the filmmakers.
“We chose this film because it’s about actors and acting and the history and current politics of intimacy on screen,” says Bricca. “It really brings together the theatre and the film & television sides of the School of Theatre, Film & Television.”
In an accompanying review of Body Parts, film essayist Chris Dashiell offered his reflections. “In recent years there has been an emergence of more women filmmakers presenting stories from women’s points of view, including films that depict female desire and the experience of sex as an active subject rather than as an object. Body Parts also pays tributes to this hopeful development. Creative freedom and equality results in good new movies.”
