Linda Paola Varela (’22) features on AZPM’s “Let’s All Go to the Lobby” podcast

February 7, 2023

University of Arizona School of Theatre, Film & Television alum Linda Paola Varela (BFA, ’22) recently talked with Mark McLemore and Chris Dashiel on their Arizona Public Media podcast Let’s All Go to the Lobby. Filmmaker and educator Robert Loomis joined the conversation to discuss Linda’s her films, her influences, and her process.

The discussion opened on Linda’s film Rose, which she made with fellow alum Skyler Cardella (BFA, ’22) in Prof. Michael Mulcahy‘s Fiction Production Class. Linda reflects on the process of combining their joint visions, making it less dialogue driven and more experiential. The discussion included Linda’s film Daughter of Eve, which was selected to screen at Festival Fotogenia in Mexico City. They went on to talk about films they’ve watched recently, and their ideas on narrative versus experiential films.

“Being a guest on “Let’s All Go to the Lobby” was such a fun and intellectually stimulating experience,” said Linda. “Getting to talk with a group of people with this level of passion for film was truly an honor. It was a great button to my time living in Tucson before moving to Los Angeles to pursue what I love. I will do this podcast again in a heartbeat. I loved revisiting the films I made while at TFTV, especially Rose. Skyler Cardella was the other half of the team that made that film and was equally responsible for its beauty. In addition to their beautiful writing of the script, their sense of aesthetics, special effects, and sound design made the film what it is. It was truly a team effort!”

“Let’s All Go to The Lobby!” is hosted by Arizona Spotlight producer Mark McLemore and film essayist Chris Dashiell. On the podcast they invite film fans to ‘join them in the lobby’ – to stock up on recommendations and history in an ongoing, upbeat conversation about great films from anytime and everywhere.
