Playwright and School of Theatre, Film & Television alum Paul Michael Thomson celebrated the opening of his play brother sister cyborg space last month at the Raven Theatre in Chicago. The play, starring fellow alum Matt Bowdren (BFA Acting, ’08), will have performances through March 17, 2024. A third TFTV alum, Brenna DiStasio (BFA Acting, ’15), serves as the play’s assistant director.
brother sister cyborg space explores the relationship between an environmental activist and her billionaire baby brother. It asks questions about wealth inequality, the climate crisis, evolving artificial intelligence, and familial relationships in an increasingly fractured political climate.
Thomson graduated summa cum laude from the Honors College, the College of Fine Arts, and the College of Humanities in 2015 with a BFA in Acting, a BA in Africana Studies, and minors in Spanish & Art History. “So much of what I learned about making theatre is informed by my education and experiences at the UA,” says Thomson. “I have used my degrees in Acting and Africana Studies to make a career telling socially-conscious stories that interrogate systems of power and our individual roles inside of them. As I currently pursue my PhD in Afro-American Studies from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and continue to write plays and make theatre, I feel grateful every day for the time I spent and lessons I learned in those four years in Tucson.”
