Associate Professor Christie Kerr is the new Artistic Director of the Arizona Repertory Theatre (ART) at the University of Arizona School of Theatre, Film & Television. She presides over the 2024/25 season, which comprises a selection of award-winning musicals and plays and musicals. Kerr takes the lead of both Arizona Repertory Theatre and the BFA in Acting and Musical Theatre program during the program’s final two years. While the BFA program is being sunset, TFTV plans to propose a minor in Musical Theatre that if approved by the University, would start accepting students as early as Fall 2025. The minor would be available to theatre students of the school’s new BA in Live and Screened Performance.
Kerr has worked as director, choreographer and intimacy coordinator on numerous ART productions including Sweeney Todd, Jesus Christ Superstar, Head Over Heels, Spring Awakening, and TFTV’s Broadway Regional Award-winning production of Legally Blonde. Kerr is also directing, choreographing, and intimacy choreographing the first production of the season, Bright Star.
On her appointment as Artistic Director, TFTV Interim Director Brant Pope wrote “Her broad knowledge of the repertoire and the deep respect and love she engenders from her students will result in high quality productions on the Marroney stage.” BFA Musical Theatre senior Haiden Pederson added that Kerr is a key figure in keeping the program strong during its last two years: Kerr emphasizes the joy of musical theatre while also focusing on students’ career development with specially tailored activities including industry Q&A’s with working professionals and alumni.
