‘Missing in Brooks County’ makes its European premiere this week at the Global Health Film Festival

An opening scene from Missing in Brooks County encapsulates the David-and-Goliath theme that runs through much of the 2020 Global Health Film Festival. Impassioned filmmakers follow well-meaning individuals as they mount small, practical challenges to vast, structural injustices. Missing in Brooks County, co-directed by Jeff Bemiss and TFTV Adjunct Instructor Lisa Molomot, and edited and produced by TFTV Associate Professor Jacob Bricca ACE, makes its European premiere this week at the Global Health Film Festival. The festival is dedicated to using film as a catalyst for discussion and change.

Congratulations to Kat Kones (BFA Film & Television ‘24) and Mira Pike (BFA Film & Television ‘24) whose thesis films WANDERED AWAY and LOVESICK are official selections of Tucson Terrorfest Film Festival!

Both films premiered at I Dream in Widescreen 2024, with Kones’ WANDERED AWAY winning the Hanson FilmTV Institute Award for Excellence in Screenwriting, and Pike’s LOVESICK lead Alyssa DiRaimondo (BFA Acting, Dec ‘23) winning the Monte Ralstin Award for Excellence in Acting.

The two films will screen on Friday Oct 25th at 7:30pm at The Screening Room (127 E. Congress). Tickets and more info is available at tucsonterrorfest.com

The sun is gonna shine again ☀️

Inspired by a true story and featuring a Tony-nominated score of bluegrass and gospel tunes by Steve Martin and Edie Brickell, BRIGHT STAR tells a sweeping tale of love and redemption set against the rich backdrop of the American South in the 1920s and ’40s.

TFTV sophomore Ollin Acosta has been cast in his first leading role in ‘Alebrijes,’ taking place at the Scoundrel & Scamp Theatre Oct 17 - Nov 3.

The bilingual show, created by Georgina Escobar and directed for The Scoundrel & Scamp Theatre by Marc Pinate, follows a man who falls deathly ill and has a dream in a mythological forest of creatures. The story is a playful homage to Pedro Linares, the real-life creator of alebrijes, the fantastical creatures made of wood or papier-mâché that have become synonymous with Mexico. Set in present-day San Luis Potosí, in Xochimilco in 1936, and in an afterlife that resembles a psychedelic Oaxacan jungle, young Pedro realizes his artistic potential and creates a cultural legacy.

“It means so much to me to be part of Alebrijes,” says Ollin. “It’s a magical story firmly rooted in Mexico that gives audiences a sense of what it means to be Mexican. And I love the journey that Pedro undertakes, finding his true self - and flourishing.”

TFTV is excited to announce the third annual Sundance Film Festival Student Trip, taking place January 24-31, 2025. The opportunity is open to all senior and junior Film & Television BFA and BA majors. Application details are available at tftv.arizona.edu/news/tftv-announces-third-annual-sundance-film-festival-student-trip/

The purpose of the trip is to provide an intensive, insider’s experience of the Festival, with the aim of helping to advance post-graduation careers through work experience at one of the film & television industry’s most important film festivals. Students will also have the opportunity to expand their industry networks and gain knowledge of the festival landscape and how it fits into the lifecycle of film and television projects. As well as being part of the festival’s official volunteer team, students will attend screenings and have access to events, panels and networking socials, as well as roundtable discussions with professionals at the Festival.

To apply for the Sundance Film Festival Student Trip, submit your application no later than Monday, October 14. It must comprise a one-page resume and a one-page cover letter detailing how this Sundance opportunity will benefit your career aspirations and goals. Email applications to Professor Jacob Bricca at jbricca@arizona.edu with the subject line “Sundance 2025″. An interview may also be required.

Shared room accommodation in multi-bedroom condo with two faculty chaperones, festival accreditation, meals and ground transportation in Utah for a total of ten (10) students will be funded by the Hanson FilmTV Institute.

The 2024 National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Student Production Awards (Rocky Mountain Emmys) took place on Saturday and UA School of Theatre, Film & Television had a record showing with 7 nominees across multiple categories and 3 award wins! Several senior thesis films earned awards for our students in the categories of Editing, Cinematography, and Performance.
