The Cripple of Inishmaan – School of Theatre, Film & Television

Off the west coast of Ireland, on the remote Island of Inishmaan, word arrives that a Hollywood film is to be shot on a neighboring island. The one person who wants to be in the film more than anybody is young “Cripple Billy,” an orphan in search of escape from the oppression of his daily life. Bringing his signature wry wit and biting social irony, playwright Martin McDonagh has crafted a painfully funny coming of age story that employs a series of whiplash reversals and false expectations. From the writer of the recently Oscar nominated film Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, this poignant comic masterpiece is equal parts dark comedy and Irish fable.

TFTV alum and rising filmmaker Diana Cadena (BA, ’21) has won a Regional Emmy® for her work on the Arizona Public Media documentary JOHN IS COLORBLIND! She also earned a nomination for a second Emmy® for NAVAJO WEAVERS.

JOHN IS COLORBLIND follows five individuals using corrective glasses that allow them to see colors that they never detected before. Cadena was a videographer on the film alongside Bob Lindberg and Eryka Dellenbach. The film was produced by Cáit NíSíomón, edited by Danny Sax, with graphics from John DeSoto.

“This is only the start of my career, and this Emmy is a reminder that there is more work to be done,” Diana said.

“I am proud of the achievements I’ve had as a Latina woman in film and so very thankful to every kind soul who has helped me along the way.”

TFTV alumni Justin Martinez (BFA, ’04) and Ben Turner (BFA ’03) are the creative talents behind LIVE AND LET DIVE, a nail-biting segment of V/H/S BEYOND, the horror anthology that drew rave reviews at this year’s Fantastic Fest. V/H/S BEYOND is the latest installment of the storied V/H/S horror series, which launched in 2012 and has since attracted a worldwide fan base and features the work of top horror filmmakers. Described as “a rollercoaster ride of tension, revulsion, and unrelenting suspense that must be seen to be believed” (MovieFreak), LIVE AND LET DIVE tells the story of a birthday skydiving trip that goes horribly wrong. TFTV recently caught up with the filmmakers.

“I’m so grateful to our professors like Michael Mulcahy for exposing us to experimental films such as PRINT GENERATION, and Beverly Seckinger for showing us the deeply personal nature of documentary film,” reflected Ben. “My little ‘James Cameron or bust’ mind was expanded thanks to them ... While I value everything I learned at TFTV, I’d say the most important is the value of relationships. I feel so fortunate to have connected with such an exceptional group of people during my time at Arizona. Many of them continue to be dear friends, and in Justin’s case, an otherworldly creative collaborator.”

At the age of 10, when Justin (instagram: @justin_s_martinez) picked up our big, bulky VHS camera and created his 1st collaboration of comic and monster skit (overwriting 1 of my movies), he was destined to blossom into his dream of becoming a director. I’m very proud of my son, and the young man, dedicated husband, and loving father he has become.
