Based on Frank Wedekind’s play of the same name, Spring Awakening explores, with poignancy and passion, the complex journey from adolescence to adulthood of a dozen young people in 1891 Germany. With a book and lyrics by Steven Sater and music by pop star Duncan Sheik that Entertainment Weekly calls, “the most gorgeous Broadway score this decade,” this eight time Tony Award winning landmark musical is an electrifying fusion of morality, sexuality and rock-n-roll.

On Monday, March 24 join the 2024-25 JustArts Fellows cohort as they share projects that drive change and expand access to enriching arts experiences at Arizona Arts.

The cohort includes TFTV students Ruben “Ben” Reynoso and Taryn Williamson.

Ben, a senior in the W. A. Franke Honors College completing a BS in Information Science and a BA in Film and Television, will be presenting his project “Tucson Zines Online – Creating a Digital Archive of Tucson Zines Throughout the Years”. The initiative focuses on increasing the accessibility of Tucson’s magazine culture by creating a digital archive.

“Tucson has a rich history of zine-making…however these zines are unfortunately not available online,” Ben said. “I work to bridge the gap between the physical and digital.”

Taryn, a third-year undergraduate completing a dual BA in Music and Live and Screened Performance will present her project, “Fit to Perform,” which is dedicated to making recording and sound technology skills more accessible to women on campus as well as aiming to change how people in performing arts view their bodies, abilities, and roles.

“I hope to create a more inclusive environment in the performing arts … to express the arts is to showcase all human experience,” Taryn shared.

School of Theatre, Film & Television alum Clayton Lukens (BFA Musical Theatre, ‘24) has been selected to join the national touring company of The Book of Mormon! Over the next 15 months, he’ll be performing in more than 80 cities across the United States, Canada and Mexico in the ensemble and understudying the lead role of Elder Price.

With music, lyrics and book by South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone together with EGOT-winner Robert Lopez, THE BOOK OF MORMON debuted on Broadway in 2011 and has since become one of the most successful musical comedies of all time. The tour will touch down in Tucson in February 2026 at Centennial Hall.

Clayton recently shared with us the path that led him to this opportunity. “Originally, I had an audition for the Broadway company of ‘The Book of Mormon’,” he said. “A few days after my audition, I got a call from my agent, the wonderful Brian Herrick from Hell’s Kitchen Agency. He asked if I was interested in going in for a callback for the tour. The big difference in this callback was that I would have to dance. I am not much of a dancer but reluctantly agreed ... In the days leading up to the callback, I worked with fellow alum Grace Gebara (BFA, ‘24) on the dance combo. After some tedious work on it, I became more and more confident. The callback ended up going really well! A couple hours after, my agent called asking if I could start that coming Monday. Within three days they had me start rehearsals for the tour in a whirlwind of intense but incredibly rewarding work.”

i looked online to see about the program...this can'r be true can it? The University of Arizona's School of Theatre, Film & Television is phasing out its BFA in Musical Theatre program, with the last graduating class expected to complete their degrees in the 2025/2026 academic year, while still offering musical theatre performances

Congratulations to Prof. Lisanne Skyler on the extraordinary international run of her film BRILLO BOX (3¢ OFF)! After multiple official festival selections, including New York Film Festival, and 8 years on HBO Max, the Oscar-shortlisted film is now drawing crowds in the art world. It’s currently screening at the Pop Art exhibit ‘From Warhol to Banksy’ at Art Gallery of Greater Victoria in Canada.

Tracking the surprising journey of an iconic Andy Warhol sculpture from her family’s living room to a record-breaking Christie’s auction, Skyler’s film has also screened as part of the exhibitions “Warhol 68” at Moderna Museet in Sweden (pictures 2-5), and “Los Angeles to New York: Dwan Gallery, 1959–1971” at LACMA and National Gallery of Art.

School of Theatre, Film & Television alum and Assistant Editor Stephanie Silva (BFA Film & Television ’19) is collecting some high-profile film credits to her name. As well as her assistant editing work on this summer’s F1 starring Brad Pitt, Stephanie contributed her skills to HOLLAND, the Nicole Kidman-led dramatic thriller making its world premiere this weekend at SXSW.

Reflecting on her time at TFTV, Stephanie shared “My biggest takeaway was to do the thing that scares you. Filmmaking is an art where you can try new things and learn from mistakes. Learning and repetition can build confidence, and never be afraid to put yourself out there.”
