DocScapes presents ‘Ricochet’

May 15, 2022 - 5:00pm to 7:00pm

Venue: The Loft Cinema

DocScapes will present a FREE screening of RICOCHET (Jeff Adachi and Chihiru Wimbush, 2021) on Sunday May 15, at 5pm at The Loft Cinema.

The screening will be followed by discussion with San Francisco Public Defenders Francisco Ugarte and Matt Gonzalez, and Pima County Justice For All campaign leaders Margo Cowan and Isabel Garcia.

The shooting of a woman by an undocumented immigrant ignites a political and media furor that candidate Trump exploits to fuel his political campaign. In the eye of the storm, two public defenders fight to reveal the truth.

RICOCHET tells the story of the trial of an undocumented immigrant, Jose Inés Garcia Zaraté, for the accidental shooting of a young woman in San Francisco in July of 2015. The incident gains national attention when Donald Trump exploits this on the campaign trail for the anti-immigration movement that he rides to the Republican nomination and eventually, the White House. At the same time, the national media takes the story and makes it a referendum on San Francisco’s sanctuary city policy. So the stakes are high when the trial finally begins in fall 2017, with the defense led by two San Francisco public defenders: Chief Attorney Matt Gonzalez and Francisco Ugarte, head of the office’s Immigration Defense Unit.

FILMMAKERS

CHIHIRO WIMBUSH (Director/Producer/Editor) is an Emmy-nominated, documentary filmmaker. Chihiro was co-director (with Amir Soltani) and cinematographer on the documentary feature, Dogtown Redemption, about homeless shopping cart recyclers in West Oakland, California. The film premiered at the Mill Valley Film Festival where it won an Audience Award, and was broadcast on Independent Lens, before being nominated for an Emmy Award. He also edited the award-winning and nationally broadcast Changing Season about a year on the Masumoto family peach farm in the Central Valley. He has directed, produced and edited numerous short films, most recently Liminal, about prisoners released during the pandemic reconnecting with nature, that had its broadcast premiere on Valley PBS. Ricochet is his third collaboration with Jeff Adachi after serving as editor on Jeff’s previous two films The Ride and Defender.

JEFF ADACHI (Director/Producer) was a social justice advocate and filmmaker, writing and directing two PBS award winning films, “The Slanted Screen: Asian Men in Film & Television” and “You Don’t Know Jack Soo” and the acclaimed short film “Racial Facial,” a short film about the history of racism in the United States. Jeff’s previous film “Defender” was selected to premiere at a sold-out screening at the SF International Film Festival and won the Best Documentary film award at the Independent Television Festival in Vermont in 2017. Jeff served as the elected Public Defender of the City and County of San Francisco from 2002-2019 and worked as a deputy public defender and Chief Attorney in San Francisco for 15 years prior to his election. His office provided legal representation to over 20,000 people each year, mostly of color. Through his legal work and activism, Jeff was a strong advocate for the civil rights of all America.

We're proud to share that TFTV Assoc. Professors Yuri Makino and Michael Mulcahy have been selected for the Udall Center for Studies in Public Policy Fellows Program to support their films on healthcare and climate change respectively. The program, which supports around four projects annually, offers Fellows a semester off from teaching to allow for scholarship and the pursuit of additional funding for research projects potentially impactful to public policy.

Makino’s feature-length documentary, AMERICA’S HEALTH: WELCOME TO THE GAME, spotlights a number of communities that are restoring healthcare to its original mission by taking control away from entities designed to profit from sickness. She is co-producing and co-directing alongside local filmmaker Christine Harland.

Mulcahy’s documentary series, MAKING ARIZONA, consists of video portraits of a range of Arizonans who are demonstrating a resilient response to the effects of global climate change, particularly drought, fire, and extreme heat.

Big round of applause for Robbie Voigt (BA Theatre Studies, '22) who has been accepted into the Musical Theatre Master of Fine Arts program at LAMDA (London Academy of Music & Dramatic Art). Among the first to be selected for the program, Voigt will move to London to commence his studies in September. 👏👏

"'Are you ready for this?' That was the first thing I asked myself when applying for LAMDA, and the last thing the audition panel asked before I left my callback. The answer is a resounding yes. I am thrilled to be furthering my studies at one of the most recognized drama schools in the world." says Voigt. "I would like to acknowledge my mentors Philip Bennett, Eric Ashley, and the incredible faculty I encountered while at TFTV: Greg Pierotti, Claire Mannle, Brent Gibbs, and of course, Wolfe Bowart. All of them saw something in me, and each one of them had a hand in getting me where I am today."

While studying at TFTV, Voigt appeared in multiple Next Performance Collective and Studio Series productions, including the first annual New Directions Festival, 'From the Fishbowl' and 'Sinkers'. On screen, Robbie starred in several films including 'Punchline', a dark comedy directed by James Valacich (BFA Film & Television, ’22) that premiered at I Dream in Widescreen. Also active in the Tucson theatre scene, Voigt most recently appeared in 'One Twig at a Time', the magical physical theatre production by Wolfe Bowart, at The Scoundrel & Scamp Theatre .

Congratulations, Robbie! Bear down!

Last weekend, Tatum Sailors' documentary AT 7 screened at the Los Angeles International Children's Film Festival (LAICFF). AT 7 follows Harrison, a 7-year-old boy grappling with everyday life as a Type One diabetic. The film premiered at What's Up, Docs? in December 2022. Missed it? Watch the film on our YouTube page: youtu.be/PyYTTrJJo04!

Sailors was present for the screening of her film at LAICFF and participated in a Q&A afterwards, where she took questions about her filming and editing process and had the opportunity to talk about her fiction film MAYBE SOMEDAY, which premiered earlier this month at Magic Hour. It's A Worm's World, the short doc by Kaleigh Brown and Jason Lee, was also selected to screen at LAICFF.

Congratulations, Tatum, Kaleigh and Jason! We look forward to seeing what you all do next!
