Unlike almost every other program, we unite theatre, film, and television in one School. Your ability to work in all three areas reflects the professional world and the exciting new careers that await you when you graduate. They aren’t separate in the world of work, and they aren’t separate in your experience in the School of Theatre, Film & Television.

 

Our extraordinary faculty offers comprehensive training in the art and business of storytelling. Whether that story is told on stage, on screens, or in the emerging world of media and entertainment, you will be given the education, training, and hands-on experience to become artistic makers and leaders for the future.

UA FTV Fiction Films

Our students' films have gained recognition at the world's top films festivals, including the Berlin Intl. Film Festival and Sundance, and feature stellar performances from rising stars in the Theatre programs. BA and BFA students in the film program work collaboratively on films, with BA students applying skills learned in producing and studies courses to lead projects in the producer role. UA FTV Documentaries

Our production students gain experience in documentary, and are taught by working filmmakers whose films can be seen on HBO, Netflix, and PBS. The documentary work is original and eclectic, and reflects the rich culture of Tucson. Student work is regularly showcased at What’s up, Docs at The Loft Cinema and at I Dream in Widescreen, the gala event of BFA senior thesis films that regularly draws crowds of over 1000 to the historic Fox Tucson Theatre. More

Craig T. Nelson and Doria Cook-Nelson are establishing an endowment to support scholarships for undergraduate students in the School of Theatre, Film & Television at the University of Arizona.

The Craig T. Nelson and Doria Cook-Nelson Scholarship Endowment, established with an initial gift of $100,000, along with a significant seven-figure estate commitment, is intended to support undergraduates with demonstrated financial need in their junior or senior year, enrolled full-time at TFTV. The Nelsons are targeting their support towards first generation college students, students who are married and/or students with children.

“The University of Arizona gave me the foundation to build a career doing what I love,” the Emmy Award-winning actor said. “We hope this endowment makes a meaningful difference and allows students to build careers that they love.”

School of Theatre, Film & Television alum Mikaela Shwer (’04) will debut her award-winning documentary THE KIDS ARE NOT ALRIGHT at the Arizona International Film Festival this week.

In a career spanning 15 years, Mikaela has worked on projects for PBS, HBO, Netflix, Hulu, and Apple TV. Her debut feature documentary, DON’T TELL ANYONE/NO LE DIGAS A NADIE (PBS), earned a Peabody Award. She worked as an editor, writer, and co-producer on the docuseries ALLEN V. FARROW (HBO) for which she received 2 Emmy nominations, and was an editor on the docuseries HARRY & MEGHAN, which holds the record for the biggest debut of a Netflix documentary.

Shwer’s new film is an intimate portrait of trauma as three families work to shed light on the devastating impacts of abuse suffered at the hands of the Troubled Teen Industry, an unregulated network of for-profit institutions claiming to fix wayward teenagers.

“Bringing the film to my home state of Arizona and particularly to Tucson, where I was first introduced to the art of film and the field of journalism through my time at the University of Arizona, is particularly special and full circle,” reflects Shwer. “Tucson is also where I began my work in editing. While attending U of A, I interned at KVOA, and I got to edit some local sports segments. Editing college basketball became crucial to starting my documentary career. When I moved to New York, I made money editing college basketball during the day so that I could intern and assistant edit at my first documentary jobs. I’m very grateful for all of my experiences in Tucson that have led me to where I am today.”
