TUCSON, Ariz. – The University of Arizona School of Theatre, Film & Television presents the 18th edition of I DREAM IN WIDESCREEN, the annual showcase of senior thesis films made by emerging filmmakers graduating from the School’s nationally ranked Film & Television program. The in-person event will once again take place at its traditional home, the Fox Tucson Theatre, on Saturday, May 6, at 7pm.
The 13 shorts, including a thriller set on a remote mountain top, a modern-day American civil war drama, and a hilarious mockumentary about a wannabe boxer, will compete for prizes awarded by a jury of industry leaders. This year’s jurors, all University of Arizona alumni, include Tanya De Angelis, the associate director of Archives and Collections at the Sundance Institute, award-winning producer Neal Edelstein (Mulholland Drive, The Ring), and Jeff Yanc, program director at the Loft Cinema, southern Arizona’s leading independent art house cinema.
“This year’s films are such a tremendously eclectic bunch.” says Jacob Bricca, ACE, TFTV’s head of Film & Television Production. “Three students made animated films, for instance, and each of them created a unique, self-contained world with its own theme and visual style. The live action films are by turns comedic, scary, sobering, tender, and profound. Every one of these students – directors, producers, craftspeople – pushed themselves to the limit to make these films what they are.”
“I DREAM IN WIDESCREEN will be the first time they’re shown to the world, but it will not be the last time they are seen. I am confident that audiences all over the country will be seeing these films at film festivals and elsewhere in the coming months.”
More than 50 films from the last three editions of IDWS were selected by film festivals nationally and internationally, providing invaluable industry exposure for the emerging filmmakers. Highlights from the past year include:
- Martin Olloren’s TWIXXX, which won the Best Performances award at the LGBTQ+ Toronto Film Festival.
- Hunter Snider’s crowd-pleaser TRUE TALL TALES WITH BUN H. BUTLER screened at the Houston Comedy Film Festival and won Best Comedy Film at the Portland Comedy Film Festival.
- Alexandra Cerna’s 2021 film TREASURES BENEATH MY TREE continued its trajectory with festival screenings in France, Switzerland, India and Australia as well as in venues across the United States as part of the Children’s Film Festival Seattle ‘Best of the Fest’ national tour.
I DREAM IN WIDESCREEN will screen in person at the Fox Tucson Theatre (17 W Congress Street Tucson) on Saturday May 6 at 7:00pm. Tickets are $5 general admission and can be purchased via the I DREAM IN WIDESCREEN website. From May 7 through 21, the program will be available to view online for free at TFTV’s YouTube channel.
